AWARENESS AND INCLUSION (A&I)

To be able to drive our vision of having an inclusive society, it is not only important to make the person with vision  impairment ready, but also prepare the sighted world to receive and nurture this relationship. Since our beneficiaries are mostly children, mainstream schools are given exposure to awareness and inclusion aspects through year long projects. These projects aim at developing the empathy quotient among typical students at mainstream schools. And helps them experience the similarities and differences between themselves and others.
A case study  of A&I project at Indira Priyadarshini School: The year began with having the students of the school as volunteers at the inclusive summer camp. In April 2023, about 40 typical students from Indira Priyadarshini School took turns to become
  • Guides during the trek
  • Playmates playing inclusive football games
  • Learning partners during exposure visits to our 16 visually impaired students
The Learning outcomes were:
  • Volunteering attitude
  • Soft skills
  • Activity-specific skills
In July 2023, about 20 students were involved in understanding literacy and tactile skills of blind students while they read tactile-braille story books. The Learning outcomes were:
  • Basic exploration skills of the blind
  • Literacy and tactile skills
  • Identifying challenges

The above exposure lead  to making tactile books and calendars for the blind. About 30 students were involved in this creative thinking process.

Here the learning outcomes were:

  • Defining problem statement
  • Alternative solutions
  • Design to implement solution
  • Organizing skills
  • Activities specific skills
  • Team work culture
  • Leadership skills
  • Creativity

During Curious Minds, a STEM exhibition, 20 students volunteers from the school exhibited inclusive accessible STEM solutions at The Experience Zone.

Here the learning outcomes were:

  • STEM learning
  • Assistive tools/solutions for the visually impaired
  • Presentation skills- Nurture Interpersonal skills
  • Undertaking responsibilities.

The last  and concluding activity was the super-fun DrumJam session where children, parents and teachers simply immersed in tuning themselves to rhythm and music!
